Martin Greenfield

The fashion world mourns the loss of Martin Greenfield, a legendary tailor who passed away today at the age of 95. Greenfield’s story is more than just about impeccable suits; it’s a testament to human resilience and the transformative power of craftsmanship.

Martin Greenfield: Early Life

Martin Greenfield was born on August 9, 1928, in Pavlovo. At the young age of 15, he and his family were captured by the Nazis and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Tragically, Martin was the sole survivor in his family. It was during this harrowing time that Greenfield discovered a skill that would shape his future: tailoring.

A simple act of sewing, though born out of necessity, became a symbol of defiance and a way to reclaim a sense of self. After mending a ripped shirt belonging to a Nazi officer, Greenfield kept the discarded garment and wore it hidden beneath his uniform. This small act offered a flicker of hope and a connection to his lost identity.

A Life Rebuilt, Thread by Thread

Following his liberation in 1945, Greenfield immigrated to the United States and began his tailoring career humbly as a floor boy in a New York garment factory. Through dedication and talent, he rose through the ranks, eventually establishing himself as a master tailor.

Greenfield’s reputation for exceptional craftsmanship attracted an impressive clientele. He crafted suits for numerous public figures, most notably becoming the tailor to six US presidents, including Dwight D. Eisenhower, with whom he shared a remarkable wartime connection. President Eisenhower was present at Greenfield’s liberation from Buchenwald, and their paths crossed again years later when Greenfield became the president’s tailor.
