On the evening of September 23, 2023, around 10:10 p.m., the Bloomington Police Department received a call about a possible stabbing in the 300 block of Kenmore, just east of the Southgate Estates Trailer Park. When the police arrived, they found a 19-year-old young man lying on the ground with very serious injuries. He was quickly taken to a nearby hospital by the Bloomington Fire Department. Sadly, despite efforts to save him, the young man, identified as Nicholas M. Zapata from Normal, Illinois, passed away at 10:59 p.m. on the same night in the emergency room at Carle BroMenn Medical Center. The initial findings from an autopsy suggest that Mr. Zapata died because he was stabbed multiple times in the chest. Further tests are being done to check for any drugs or toxins in his system.
Later, at around 11:47 p.m., deputies from the McLean County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Bloomington Police Department went to a rural area outside Heyworth, Illinois, and arrested a 16-year-old boy who is suspected of being involved in this incident. Thankfully, the arrest happened without any trouble. The teenager was taken to the Bloomington Police Department for questioning and was later moved to the McLean County Juvenile Detention Center.
