Who was Mike Cardinal ?
Mike Cardinal is an inspiring example of resilience and determination. Born into a large family in 1941 Northern Alberta, Mike dropped out of school in grade 8 to look after his family but soon returned to school and graduated from 12th grade, then spending a decade working in forestry and sawmill operations before entering the public sector. In the public sector, he worked as a mortgage officer with the Alberta Housing Corporation before transferring to Alberta Human Resources Development Authority, where he developed a native housing/relocation program. He then moved to the department of Advanced Education and Manpower and served as regional supervisor of Employment/Counselling Services for 10 years, followed by another three years as regional manager of Employment and Relocation Counselling Services and three more as a senior coordinator. His dedication to progressing through education despite personal difficulties will likely continue to inspire many for generations to come.

With a heavy heart and fond memories, we mourn the passing of Mike Cardinal, who passed away peacefully on January 12 at the age of 81 due to advance age. Mike was a beloved politician from Alberta, Canada who was a proud member of the Legislative Assembly from 1989 to 2008. Representing the districts of Athabasca-Lac La Biche, Athabasca-Wabasca, and Athabasca-Redwater during his 19 years in office. He also held 5 cabinet posts for Prime Minister Ralph Klein’s government during his tenure.Mike’s legacy will live on through those he served, influenced and inspired throughout his long term in politics and beyond. His kind an gentle spirit will be sorely missed by all those who knew him well. May he Rest In Peace.

Throughout his life, our Dad was a beloved member of many communities. Not only was he a cherished son and brother, but a loving father and grandfather who left an indelible mark on the many people whose lives he touched. For 19 years, he served as an MLA, during which time he strived to make things better for everyone he encountered; always someone who cared deeply about helping others, our Dad embodied what it meant to be a leader. We all know how immensely proud he was of this role. To honor all that our Dad has done for us and the world, his family will be holding a traditional wake in Calling Lake, Alberta on January 19th followed by a memorial service on the 20th. Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult things anyone can go through. Our hearts are with those who have had to endure this loss.
