Tributes to Maurice Jamal

L. Michael Gipson Wrote,

I’m really sorry to hear the news about actor and filmmaker Maurice Jamal. He made the impossible possible at a time when nobody was looking to make Black queer film. That alone made him and his accomplishments special. I had the privilege of getting to know this creator IRL, during my brief time living in Cali. I found him a lovely and humble human and was delighted that he hadn’t gone “Hollywood.” He’d had some ups and downs with his weight and health in subsequent years. And, mutual friends asked me to check on him a couple of years ago because no one had heard from or seen him from our set in a while and people were beginning to fear the worst since he’d been ill. I found out he was living, but really wasn’t trying to be “on the scene” anymore. I respected that and provided the necessary space (as did those inquiring through me). So, this news isn’t entirely unexpected, but is still sad to hear. Untimely deaths of young-ish mavericks always is rough to receive. May this pioneering soul rest in eternal peace. Well done.
