Mariah Smith Died

Mariah Smith, a 12-year-old sixth-grader, lost her life in a terrible shooting on August 24, 2023. Mariah was simply sitting on her family’s couch when a 14-year-old boy named Jatarious Rashad Fluellen fired several shots into their home, and one of those shots struck Mariah. It was a heartbreaking and senseless act that took the life of a young girl.

Mariah Smith Died: What Happened to Her?

On the evening of Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 9:06 P.M., the Lake City Police Department received a distressing call reporting a person who had been shot on NW Long Street. Responding officers swiftly arrived at the scene, where they found 12-year-old Mariah Smith, who had sustained a gunshot wound. They immediately provided Mariah with first aid, and emergency medical services (EMS) further tended to her injuries. Sadly, despite all efforts to save her, Mariah tragically lost her life.

Following this heartbreaking incident, a thorough investigation was launched, leading to the identification of a suspect. On Monday, August 28, 2023, a 14-year-old named Jatarious Rashad Fluellen was apprehended and charged with Mariah’s murder. It’s worth noting that additional arrests may be made as the investigation continues.

A viewing to pay respects to Mariah will take place on Friday, September 8, 2023, between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. at New Day Spring Missionary Baptist Church, located at 709 NW Long St., Lake City, FL. To celebrate Mariah’s life, a special ceremony will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at the Columbia County School Board, situated at 372 W. Duval St., Lake City, FL.
