Tragically, Columbus police announced the passing of 16-year-old Kole Shewmaker, who succumbed to injuries on Wednesday evening at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Kole was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a crash on South Marr Road that occurred on Tuesday afternoon. The details surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
Kole Shewmaker Accident: How It Happened
The Columbus Police Department is currently looking into a two-vehicle crash that happened on Tuesday afternoon on South Marr Road, causing injuries to three people. At around 1:30 p.m., CPD officers were called to the 700 block of South Marr Road after reports of a vehicle crash with injuries, according to Lt. Matt Harris, the spokesperson for the Columbus Police Department. Upon investigation, it was determined that a 2009 Chevy Cobalt, driven by 16-year-old Luis Y. Otero of Columbus, was heading north in the 700 block of South Marr Road when he lost control of his vehicle.
The Chevy crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2016 Toyota Corolla, driven by 66-year-old Cheryl A. Hanner of Norman, Indiana. Both Otero and his passenger, 16-year-old Kole Shewmaker of Columbus, sustained injuries in the crash.
Shewmaker was flown by IU Lifeline to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and is in extremely critical condition, while Otero was also flown to IU Methodist Hospital and is in serious condition. Hanner, who suffered significant but non-life-threatening injuries, was transported to IU Methodist Hospital for treatment.
The Bartholomew County Accident Reconstruction Team is currently handling the investigation of the crash.
