Julia Mazur, a member of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins ice crew, sadly passed away due to cancer. Her passing has cast a shadow of grief over not only her family and friends but also the close-knit local ice hockey community that she was a cherished part of.
Who was Julia Mazur?
Julia Mazur, a dynamic and hardworking young woman, had been an integral part of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins ice crew for the past seven years. Not only did she contribute to the team’s success, but she also played a vital role in the local hockey community. A graduate of La Salle Academy in 2017 and Holy Cross High School in 2021, Julia pursued mass communications at Wilkes University.

Her commitment extended beyond the ice rink as she worked as an Alterations Specialist at David’s Bridal, at Toyota Sportsplex, and as a Skate Technician at Hat Trick Hockey Pro Shop. Julia’s love for garment sewing, upcycling, and, of course, ice hockey defined her diverse and passionate interests.
Julia Mazur’s Cause of Death
The world, especially the hockey community, is mourning the loss of a wonderful person. Julia was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic melanoma cancer in July. The news came as a great shock, especially after knowing that the cancer had already spread to her lymph nodes, liver, lungs, and some of her bone joints and breast. Despite putting up a brave and determined fight, Julia passed away on November 18, 2023. Julia is remembered as a hardworking and determined individual, described as a hustler with a strong passion for life.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins confirmed her passing through a Facebook post, sharing the sad news with the community.
Tributes to a Hockey Hero:
In the wake of Julia’s passing, tributes poured in from friends, colleagues, and the hockey community at large. Preston Cunius, expressing gratitude for Julia’s mentorship, shared a heartfelt message on Facebook.
Julia Hockey Mazur I just want to say, thank you for showing me the ropes at the rink, teaching me how to stat keep, how to run the scoreboard, and how to keep up with all the other goofballs at the rink lol, thanks for always visiting me in the team store in my first year there, our conversations were always fun. I hope you continue to watch over our rink, I’ll always take great pride in helping run D league for you and I hope you still watch every game
Another tribute, from the Revolution Ice Center, conveyed condolences to Julia’s family and celebrated her as a friend, employee, and mentor.
