Who was Frank Kozik?
Frank Kozik, a legendary American graphic artist, was born on January 9, 1962. He is best known for his posters for alternative rock bands, which featured a distinctive style that turned American pop culture on its head and created a unique dialogue between good and evil. Kozik’s art is a mixture of visually beautiful and engaging images that are sometimes bright, and other times gloomy, distant, and piercing in his rock posters. His passion for science and space was evident since his childhood years when he lived in Spain. He migrated to the United States in 1976, leaving school to enlist in the military. Kozik settled in Austin, Texas, where he was introduced to the punk music scene and began creating posters to advertise local musicians.
His work was featured in the Austin Chronicle, and he was later hired by a major T-shirt store, where he honed his skills in the printing industry. After a year of producing “less than ‘cool’ designs,” Kozik decided to go freelance and has since worked as a rock poster artist. Kozik’s work has been published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., and the National Museum of American Art, in conjunction with Therese Thau Heyman, in New York and Washington, D.C., in 1998. Sad to hear that Frank Kozik @frankkozik / Man’s Ruin records has passed. He was a big part in Fu Manchu’s record releasing history. When he asked us to do our first “Godzilla” 10” back in 1996 with his record label he said to go overboard on the guitar fuzz!!!!! Then we did our “Eatin’ Dust” 10” with him a few years later, then he released both on a 12”. He only asked that he would like to do the artwork / layout for the releases and to do a very small number of colored vinyl for each release. Thanks for everything! RIP Frank Kozik! A massive influence on myself and so many others in the art world!!! I didn’t personally know Frank but I did get to talk to him a couple of times and I was lucky enough to get to be a part of the same collection of tour poster artists with him during a Mastodon tour, last year. He was a giant in this industry! Single handedly brought concert posters back to prominence in the late eighties and early nineties! He was a godfather, of sorts, in this side of rock-n-roll art! But he did so much more in the world of rock-n-roll art and pop art!!! Record labels, (Mans Ruin,) album art, music videos, toys, (Kid Robot) etc… it’s a long list!!! He’ll be sorely missed!!!
