David Perry Lindley, an American musician, was born in San Marino, California in 1944. He was best known for founding the band El Rayo-X and collaborating with many famous musicians such as Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Curtis Mayfield, and Dolly Parton. He was renowned for mastering a vast array of instruments, so much so that Acoustic Guitar magazine dubbed him a “maxi-instrumentalist.” Lindley’s expertise primarily lies in string instruments such as the violin, acoustic and electric guitar, and upright bass, among others. He was also a founding member of the 1960s band Kaleidoscope and worked as a musical director for several touring artists. Lindley’s vast musical abilities have made him a highly respected and sought-after musician in the industry.

David Lindley’s Career
David Lindley is an American musician who grew up in Los Angeles with a father who had a vast collection of 78 rpm records. He began playing the violin at age three but later switched to the baritone ukulele in his early teens after breaking the bridge. Lindley then became interested in playing the banjo and the fiddle, which he won multiple awards for. He was a regular at folk music clubs in the 1960s, where he was exposed to a wide variety of music genres, including flamenco, Russian folk music, and Indian sitar music.
From 1966 to 1970, Lindley was a member of the psychedelic band Kaleidoscope, which released four albums during that period. After the band broke up, he joined Terry Reid’s band for a few years in England. In 1972, he teamed up with Jackson Browne and played in his band until 1980. Lindley also toured with other famous artists during the 1970s, including Crosby-Nash, Linda Ronstadt, and James Taylor.
In 1981, he formed his own band, El Rayo-X, with Jackson Browne producing their first album. Lindley went on to tour as a solo artist and as part of a duo, playing a multitude of instruments and becoming known for his diverse talents. He even wrote a song glorifying a brand of male condoms on his album Win this Record! His career has spanned over several decades, and he remains a respected and influential musician in the industry.
