He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 35th round of the 2001 MLB Draft after playing college baseball at the University of New Mexico. Cooper spent most of his career in the Mets farm system and played in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball in 2007 before heading to Italy to play for Montepaschi Grosseto from 2008 to 2011. He later joined T&A San Marino for three years and played a significant role in the team’s 2012 Italian Baseball Series win.

Cooper, who had Italian heritage, represented the Italy national baseball team in the 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classic tournaments. He played a key role in Italy’s victory over the Netherlands in the 2010 European Baseball Championship final, pitching for six innings and recording eight strikeouts.
