On a somber evening in Phoenix, mourners gathered to remember Carlos Parra, the lead singer of regional Mexican music group Los Parras. The 26-year-old vocalist died tragically in a car crash near Hermosillo, Sonora, while driving to Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, over the weekend. Parra’s family started the band, with Carlos as lead singer and his twin brother, César Parra, on guitar and their older brother, Cristhian Parra, on the accordion. The family, friends, and fans assembled at Carlos’ wake at the Legends Event Center at 43rd Avenue and West Camelback Road, sharing stories of his kind and friendly nature.

At the front of the hall was Carlos’ copper-colored casket, surrounded by large funeral wreaths and a bountiful coffin spray of white flowers. Attendees watched videos of Carlos performing, riding a roller coaster, and watching a 2022 World Cup match in Qatar. Cristhian shared a video of his brothers surprising him with shoes for his birthday. Phoenix resident Yazmin Gonzalez knew Carlos from school and empathized with the family’s loss, having lost her father to COVID-19 in 2021. “I feel the pain. Even I get choked up thinking about the family,” Gonzalez said. Yosmara Martinez and Maria Sandoval, who attended high school with Carlos, said they have been crying since they heard of the singer’s death.
